Joanne Mott

Joanne Mott was originally inspired by the intriguing carved lines formed by boring insects. Joannne Mott employs a power tool not to replicate, but suggest a similar activity. We share much in common with the insects seeking to build their colonies and communities. Joanne Mott's work speaks of an ongoing interest and investigation into the constructs of culture and nature.

Each work is built up from layers, made of sandwiched slithers of native "Hoop pine" timber plywood, painted or sealed with a resinous coating. These layers are then carved out in varying lines by means of a router power tool, revealing the raw timber contours of the grain beneath the surface.

These works continue Mott's ongoing interest and investigation into the constructs of culture and nature.

Form and formlessness interplay through the use of classical line work, derived from the European traditions of ornamental borders of the renaissance and baroque and employed in random, disjointed and overlaid courses. The carved lines transcend their initial interpretation, reflecting instead a representation from whence the highly formal designs were most often derived: organic "nature".

Joanne Mott has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2010 McClelland Sculpture Prize. Mott completed a Masters of Fine Art (Painting) at Monash in 2009. In 2005 Mott won the Discovery Art Prize at Gasworks Sculpture Park.
