22 Mar Atong Atem creates a tapestry with the Australian tapestry workshop

Atong Atem has had an incredibly busy few months, this time with the Australian Tapestry Workshop. The Workshop received support from the Playking Foundation to commission fifteen Australian artists as part of the ‘Weaving Futures’ project. Pamela Joyce will be weaving ‘Self Portrait in July (4)’ into a vibrant and complex tapestry throughout 2021.

MARS now has three photographs from this series available in two sizes – which includes the design base for the tapestry as well as two previously unseen self-portraits. This micro-series draws inspiration from wax print fabrics, and Atong explores the performance of femininity and beauty through a more kitsch and mid-century aesthetic.
