MARS Gallery presents Public Art NOW, a seminar to explore contemporary public art .
A panel of five speakers who are engaged in creative placemaking projects will discuss how they navigate the complexities of realising art in the public realm. Discussions will touch on the shifting field of public art practice, the role of community consultation, sustainability and future directions of integrating art.
The talk will provide architects, designers, developers and public servants the space to consider the opportunities and challenges of working in the public sphere and the impact these changes have had to artists and the community.
Each presenter will take you through the journey of the public art process, from the very onset to the reception of a public artwork.
Commencing with Lisa Dunlop, Manager for Urban Design and Urban Planning at the Level Crossing Removal Project, we will discuss from a client’s point of view commissioning art outside the gallery space. Participants will also hear from public art consultant Andy Dinan on the experience of integrating public art within the current cultural landscape and the challenges of curating for the public realm.
Highly acclaimed Australian artist Lisa Roet whose large-scale installation of a chimpanzee was installed at Hamer Hall earlier this year, will explore the commissioning process for an artist and Jason Waterhouse will discuss the role of a fabricator in envisioning a public artwork. Amy Barclay, Public Art Project Lead for the City of Melbourne, will discuss how Council has evolved its governance and procurement structures and processes to develop commissioning models that ensures each project is intrinsically of its place; informed by Kulin world-view; and is ultimately artist-led.
The event will also be streamed live on @marsgallery Instagram, so if you can’t make it be sure to tune in!
