17 Jun Stephanie Leigh | The Lyric Emerging Artist Residency

Stephanie Leigh will commence her residency at The Lyric Emerging Artist Gallery with the opening of her exhibition ‘The Eternal Protagonist’ on Saturday 8 July from 4-6pm.

‘The Eternal Protagonist’ is a series of paintings which criticise the conceptual framework of the ‘male gaze’. Through the repainting of the same female figure, ‘The Eternal Protagonist’ focuses on the repeated action of female representation in historical painting. The works engage in analytical thought, concerning the consequences of male possessiveness over the sexualisation of women, arguably beginning with painting.

The Lyric Emerging Artist Gallery is an initiative created by SMA Projects, with MARS Gallery, to support local emerging artists in the City of Yarra. The Artist in Residency Program is a 2-month rotation where emerging artists are provided with a studio and gallery space to prepare and exhibit their works.
