MARS presents Light Now featuring works by Megan Streader, Diego Ramirez and Jenna Lee for Sydney Contemporary 2023. Light Now displays each artist’s different use of the medium of light.
Meagan Streader’s work alters the limits of light within sculpture and installation. For Sydney Contemporary 2023, Streader’s work will manipulate, reinterpret and extend upon the boundaries of constructed spaces. Streader’s work has always been concerned with perception and pushing the boundaries of what light can do – how it shifts and changes in relation to the body, surroundings, material properties, and atmosphere.
Jenna Lee is a Gulumerridjin (Larrakia), Wardaman and KarraJarri Saltwater woman with mixed Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Anglo Australia ancestry. To make light was created during her residency with Kyoto Art Center supported by the Australian Council for the Arts. The title is one translation of the Larrakia (Aboriginal) word balarr and references research undertaken during the residency on the relationships between kozo, paper and light, expressed in the form of woven carrying vessels.
Diego Ramirez is a Mexican-born, Melbourne-based artist who often explores social and environmental concerns through humorous imagery and references to religion and folklore.
Director of MARS Gallery, Andy Dinan, is delighted to be presenting Light Now at Sydney Contemporary 2023. “Both artists featured encapsulates light as a contemporary art medium, in new and exciting ways. The artists each build different worlds of light and space, far from the nature of reality and into something otherworldly, alluring and inviting. Light Now invites the viewer to experience and engage with the material and ethereal nature of light, as interpreted by our artists.”
