This painting shows a jewel from a scene in an episode of Antiques Roadshow. Bringing ideas of 'value' into focus through one of its most literal symbols—jewels—the work plays with the strange crossroads of cultural, historical, personal, private, public, sentimental and monetary valuation offered by this long-running British television programme. It builds on Hine's critical fascination with formulaic British narrative formats including 'cosy' TV, and the comfort and familiarity these seem to offer audiences.
