“Do Pygmy Possums Eat Plums?” depicts a mountain pygmy possum sitting atop a Davidson plum, surrounded by a flurry of native moths. Drawn beneath a magnifying glass, each strand of fur and feathery scale has been delicately rendered in graphite pencil. Here, attentive and sustained looking and mark-making transform the drawing into an expression of care for the image’s living counterparts. Using imaginative composition and intricate detail, it invites audiences to pause and attend closely to this small yet vibrant ecology, consider their own interactions with the natural world, and wonder… do pygmy possums eat plums?
About Eva Nolan:
Eva Nolan is a Gadigal/Sydney-based artist whose creative practice explores ecological interdependencies and human–more-than-human relationships. She has recently completed a practice-based PhD at UNSW Art, Design & Architecture, where she examined the colonial legacy of natural history illustration and experimented with ways of representing multispecies entanglements.
Growing up in Port Macquarie, Nolan developed a curiosity about the natural world early in life, enchanted by the local rainforest reserves and coastal environments. After moving to Sydney, her affinity with nature evolved into an increasing awareness of its vulnerability. This has continued to inform her art practice, which considers how species are observed and represented while fostering care for more-than-human worlds.
Nolan is represented by Olsen Gallery, Sydney, and has presented three solo exhibitions with the gallery, including her recent PhD examination exhibition Entangled Ecologies (2026). Her work has been exhibited internationally at Arts Catalyst, London, and Xinying Cultural Centre, Taiwan, and she has undertaken residencies including UNSW Wild Deserts Artist Retreat (2026) and Hua Hin International Contemporary Arts Residency, Thailand (2024). She has been selected as a finalist in major Australian prizes including the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, the Kedumba Drawing Award, the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award, and the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award.
