The Swimmer: Chantel de Latour
Chantel de Latour’s newest body of work ‘The Swimmer’ explores the ambiguous zone between public and private spaces through the element of water.
As the point of perception shifts between exterior and interior spaces, the concept of a fixed parameter becomes less certain. Recurring motifs of swimming pools and other bodies of water continue to question the possibilities of containment.
The places where we swim – oceans, rivers, lakes, swimming pools, baths – are also places of connection. Whether the encounter is with other swimmers, or with an expanded understanding of ourselves, entering a body of water is entering a new elemental space.
Chantel completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts (2011) and a Graduate Certificate in Art History at the University of Melbourne (2018). She is the recipient of the Gary Fell and Shelmerdine Art Awards and has been exhibiting since 2009.
