She Paints Her
Opening celebration: Saturday April 12th, 5-7pm
As subject matter, women have long been subject to a male interpretation of the female form. Capturing the eyes and minds of artists, from drawers to sculptors, and especially painters, the woman has historically existed only as muse. Featuring the work of twelve female artists, She Paints Her shifts our gaze to the Australian women painting women.
Redefining the image of the woman, these twelve emerging to established artists are developing new ways to communicate womanhood through their practices of painting, sculpting and etching.
From Jacqui Stockdale’s evocative symbolism, to Dani McKenzie’s meditations on the stranger, Jacqueline Hennessey’s near photographic realism, Lily Walker’s examination of the domestic and Jessica Murtagh's etched forms on glass, She Paints Her challenges the history of the woman as only ‘subject’, and celebrates the women painting women.
Whether in surreal, imagined spaces or familiar everyday scenes, these twelve artists each channel an impulse and experience; something, and someone, who has always been forgotten in depictions of ‘womanhood’.
