Peta Mabo-Duncan is an emerging, Torres Strait Islander lens-based artist whose work is both an exploration of her identity and a love letter to her culture and community. Through her work, Peta explores familial relationships, cultural practices and the juxtapositions of embedding cultural knowledge in different contemporary photographic mediums and approaches.

"These pieces - Koki Rains, Webadu, Koki Winds, Webok —are the beginnings of a growing body of visual meditations of the instinctive choreography between body and earth. It is a visual ode to memory, movement, and the enduring poetry of everyday life on Mer Island.

Through these distilled elemental forms, I seek to honour my community and our enduring knowledge and connection to Country. Capturing candid moments of island life as it unfolds. These moments and gestures act as quiet declarations of presence within the landscape, celebrating our connection to the land as both playful and reverent.

These works are not just representations—they are invitations. They ask viewers to listen deeply, to feel the wind on the reef, to witness the quiet power of kinship, and to reflect on what it means to carry culture forward."

- Peta Mabo-Duncan

Peta recently showcased at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in 2025 and at the Melbourne Town Hall as part of the Yirramboi Festival 2025. The NAIDOC Week show will mark Peta's debut exhibition in a commercial gallery.
