As reported in AFR's round-up of Sydney Contemporary Art Fair, Meet the new faces of Australian art - Atong Atem's debuted her series This Happened To You last week at Sydney Contemporary. We are delighted to share that her work was featured on the cover of Art Collector's special edition magazine for the fair!
This new series of velvet textile works reflects Atong’s ongoing exploration of family, lineage and mythology, all while the artists’ own family expands, and as she welcomes her second child. The series will debut globally this November at Photo Paris.
Currently, Atong is showing in a permanent exhibition at the National Maritime Museum of the Netherlands. She is also showing works from her ‘Surat’ series in the prestigious Rencontres D’Arles in partnership with PHOTO Australia from July to October 2025. During her presentation at the Rencontres D’Arles, Atong was selected as one of six nominees for the Prix de La Photo Madame Figaro, an acclaimed prize championing women photographers who exhibit excellence, creativity and originality of vision.
Across Australia, Atong is currently exhibiting at the National Gallery of New South Wales, National Portrait Gallery, and The Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre.
Congratulations Atong!
